back to Saari

A radical dedication to stillness and the embodying of what lives there.

This new work perhaps started in 2003 when I began writing the first notes about disappearance, although in some performances I had already included elements of the same areas of interest, such as presence, stillness, intimacy, kinds of visibility, places of apparent disappearance. In 2015 I began tuning into this project specifically, investigating different ways of and interests in disappearing. During this time I came to focus on one main inspiration that since has been directing the work: The Rothko Chapel in Houston, USA. Fourteen paintings by Mark Rothko in an octagonal space with natural light only and a monolithic sculpture by Barnett Newman outside, together ‘set up a contrasting dynamic of contemplation and action’. It is a space where one can experience ‘its unique tranquility and vibrant presence’. The phases of experiences I went through each time when spending time in the Chapel, I work on to embody in the dance and share through this performance. To connect in the stillness and move through all that can take place within.

In March and April 2015, I began working on this project during the 2-month residency at Saari in Finland, dedicating every day dancing in the studio and outside to stillness, layering, articulation, transparency. I also made a small photobook with images made in Saari’s inspiring environment, focussing on layering, articulation and transparency in visual material.

In the year that followed, I continued working in studios in Amsterdam. Sometimes intensively for a week, sometimes with more time in between rehearsals.

In August/September 2016, I had the chance to intensively work on this project in a 3 week residency at Kokko1721, in the East of Finland, to further my practise and investigation. Before i began there, i performed Towards/Disappearance. A solo dance performance as part of this new piece in process: ‘Field of Disappearance’.

In November 2016, i worked intensively in the studio in Amsterdam, followed by a studio sharing with collegues. It was part of a week working with Michael Schumacher. In January i shared some aspects of my work in a project Field of Reciprocity in Indonesia. In February 2017 i performed Towards Disappearance as part of my process, at SpazioNU.

From these experiences and from the exchanges that followed the performances/sharings, i am now developing ways to continue the making of this piece. It is a deliberate choice to work on it long term, seeing the nature of the project and the clarity of embodiment i wish to find, both in the dance itself and in the choreography/composition. Updates will be posted on the site. See below:

As part of the continuing process, i perform Towards Disappearance, a solo in different contexts, or occasionally i may choose another point of view to investigate. This performance ranges between 20-40 minutes in length and is often shared in a studio or low tech situation:
